Choosing a Paint Color for My Daughter’s Room

September 9, 2015 By Karen Cooper 6 Comments

Basically since the time my daughter, M, could speak, she’s been telling me she’s wanted a green bedroom. As in grass-colored, bright, bold green. When we lived in our old house, I compromised by painting a bold green stripe around her room in her chosen color:

…which she loved. Then, one day, she was flipping through my Better Homes and Gardens magazine and found this picture:

And she wanted me to recreate it in her room. So, I came up with this:

…which was close, but I hadn’t painted the walls yet.

And then we moved.

And she has a beige room…

…which she is not happy about. At. all.

She asked me again to paint her room green, and I stalled. I didn’t really want to paint this room green, because I thought it’d be dark and make the room seem smaller. So, I balked.

And she asked again. And again. And again.

And then we got news that she might have this crazy auto-immune disease.

And suddenly, I honestly didn’t care what color paint was on the walls of her room. Whatever she wants is fine with me. It’s just paint, and she should be happy.

So, we started over. First, we picked a few greens:

On the left is HGTV by Sherwin Williams’ Welsh Green (HGSW1283); on the right is HGTV by Sherwin Williams’ Paradox Green (HGSW1273).

We decided that the Welsh Green wasn’t the “right” green – a little too blue – and Paradox Green was too brown or dark, especially at night.

Back to the drawing board. She decided to try some teals instead, since there’s already so much green in her room.

The winner was Cooled Blue, from the HGTV by Sherwin Williams Coastal Cool collection.

I really love how it looks with the different greens in her room:

Pardon the unmade bed. We did this when M was home for tests and I didn’t make her make her bed.

I love the color choice and am excited to give her the room she wants. Stay tuned – the paint is on its way!!

*HGTV by Sherwin Williams is providing the paint for this project. As always, all opinions and work done here are 100% my own. Honest.

Great color! Can’t wait to see end result. A fun mother-daughter project. We’re narrowing down colors for an accent wall in our living room. Just ordered sample sizes of different blues (Benjamin Moore: Labrador Blue; Jamestown Blue; Whipple Blue; and Mill Springs Blue) that we’ve narrowed it down to so we can have good size samples up to decide. How can there be so many colors?!?!?!
