Day 13: Traditions

November 13, 2013 By Karen Cooper Leave a Comment

For Day 13 of Thirty Days of Gratitude, I am grateful for family traditions.

Going along with the theme for the week of prepping for Thanksgiving, I’ve been thinking about our family traditions.

Perfect Table Setting from Target #MyKindOfHoliday

Content and/or other value provided by our partner, Target.

For example, even though only one of us eats it, we have to have cranberry sauce from the can, the kind that has the ridges in it. One year, we decided not to have it and EVERYONE noticed and demanded we get some immediately. Oops.

Also, we have to have peas. A particular brand of peas, in fact. No one really likes the peas, but we have to have them because my mother had them when she was growing up, my grandmother had them on her table, etc. etc. You get the idea.

I think the peas would look nice in one of these brightly colored bowls. Even if no one eats the peas.

This is the first year in a while we are hosting Thanksgiving.  I need to think about platters and serving pieces we need. Our tradition is to have turkey, cornbread dressing, sweet potatoes…

…and the tradition for the sweet potatoes is that half has to be topped with pecans/brown sugar and half has to be topped with mini-marshmallows. Then everyone is happy.

This year, we actually have traditions colliding a bit, because Hanukkah starts the day before Thanksgiving. So, the night before Thanksgiving, I’ll be shredding potatoes and making latkes for that celebration.

The latkes would look pretty on this tray, although everyone pretty much gobbles them up as they come out of the pan!

Those are some of our traditions and how we celebrate #MyKindOfHoliday at our home. What are some of your traditions?
