Defy Definition: Finding Your Design Style

July 17, 2013 By Karen Cooper 4 Comments

Lately, I’ve noticed lots of “polls” from design magazines and websites asking readers to take a quiz to find the reader’s own design style.

“What’s your style?? Take our quiz and find out!”

So I’ve been pondering that very question: what’s my style? How would I label or define it?

I took one of the many quizzes online and the first one told me my style was “cottage.” Hmmm. I don’t think that’s right – I don’t have anything really cottage-y in my home.

I decided to take a different quiz. It came up “Happy Modern.” That seems a bit closer.

Bottom line: don’t let the design and decor labels limit you. Your home should make you happy. You should walk in and feel, well, HOME.

And that home can consist of modern elements, cottage elements, vintage elements…whatever.  Your style should consist of those design choices that make you comfortable.

Surround yourself with what you love. Your “style” then reveals itself.

For me, I’m going with “modern-upcycled-colorful-eclectic” as how I would define my design style. That pretty much sums me up.

Based on the photos, I would say your style is “dog.” 🙂

I’m good with that. I can still remember you telling me, when we first moved here, that your apartment was “early American Walmart.” Cracked me up.

Ha! I don’t remember that, but it sounds quite descriptive of the time and like something I would say. I’m not sure what my style is now, but I think I’ve stepped it up a little since then.
