Front Porch Makeover

June 23, 2016 By Karen Cooper 6 Comments

In my last post, I said I was going to do some little things around the house to get more organized. I stuck to my word, and organized our front porch.

The front porch is where we keep our shoes – and dump other stuff when we walk in the door. Here’s what it looked like before:

The shoe baskets were mismatched, but more importantly one was broken and they were all overstuffed.

I replaced these baskets with smaller, but taller, baskets from Target.

I knew, as soon as I saw these baskets, they’d be perfect for shoe storage.

I emptied the old baskets and put away the off-season shoes, then put the too-small shoes in the donate pile.

The porch looks so much better!

Even Hank thinks so!

It’s amazing what a difference such a small change makes! And, since it’s the first thing we see when we walk in, it changes how I feel when I walk in the house. Rather than feeling chaos and mess, I feel calmer.

Sometimes little changes make all the difference.

Looks great and I love the new blue and white baskets. I’m following your do some little things advice and it is less stressful and gives me a feeling of yes, I’ll get all the things done. Instead of going full bore and trying to do everything in one day, only to feel wiped out and overwhelmed because you didn’t finish EVERYTHING on the list, you pace yourself and feel the sense of accomplishment. Today’s little things: I pruned the two lilac bushes, cut the dead wood from two hydrangea bushes, fed and watered a few new plantings. I have some more little things to do tomorrow. Enjoying my summer, hope you are, too!

Exactly! I’m so glad the little things advice is working! I love it!! I’m glad you are enjoying your summer; we definitely are. The slower pace is good for all of us!

Looking nice, Karen. Will pass this on to my daughter for her front hallway!

Is your porch enclosed? Mine is screened and when it rains the floor gets wet. Any other ideas?

My front porch is enclosed, but my back porch is not (just screened). On the back porch, for storage, I have a three-drawer plastic rolling cart in which I keep garden gloves, work shoes, and yard bags. I keep it closer to the house, so that it doesn’t get wet. Hope that helps!
