Getting It Done and Letting It Go – It’s All Good.

November 5, 2015 By Karen Cooper Leave a Comment

One of our fabulous readers made this comment yesterday:

“I am diligently trying to clear a pile/project everyday, but nothing I’ve done compares to drying out a wet basement. My big accomplishment today was to get out the step stool & put away an assortment of baking pans (that I took out & then did not use!), which have been hanging out on the kitchen counter for 2 weeks. I also changed out the paper towel I like to keep in the microwave – am I not an amazing whirlwind of energy? & activity??”

Here’s the thing: Yes! THAT IS AWESOME!

This is actually the whole idea behind this year’s Thirty Days of Gratitude project: getting some tidying up done around the house and feeling grateful that the project – whatever its size – is finally done.

I’ve been doing this all around our house and it’s amazing how much better I feel once each little thing is done. For example, yesterday I put some paint supplies – which had been sitting on the dining room table for weeks – in the basement. Not a huge project, but I immediately felt better once it was done.

I went through a pile of papers on my desk that had been sitting there for weeks. Done. Check.

I don’t want you to think that, to participate with me in this project, you have to tackle an entire room or even just an entire space in your home.

Just tackle one task. That’s it. Put the baking sheets away. Go through one pile of papers. Baby steps feel just as good as giant leaps.[bctt tweet=”Just tackle one task. That’s it. Put the baking sheets away. Go through one pile of papers.”]

Today, I’ve hired someone to come over and haul a bunch of stuff out of my house. He will be taking a rolled-up carpet that’s in our basement, left over from the previous owners (not sure why they wanted to save it!); the old kitchen cabinets that have been ruined by the water in the basement; stuff from the shed; and stuff from our carport (cleaned out the shed and carport yesterday).

And what I’ve learned in all this is that, sometimes, it feels good to just let it go. Let go of the stuff, of the unfinished projects that I always thought I’d get to someday. Time to let those go. There will be other projects to tackle. If I haven’t gotten to these by now – some I’ve had the stuff more than a year! – then I’m probably not going to.

Anyway, do something small today that has been nagging at you for at least a week. Tackle one thing. That’s it. Then we’ll all celebrate with you! Share in the comments the one thing you accomplish today, m’kay?
