A BIG Announcement that Made Me Come to My Senses

March 26, 2015 By Karen Cooper 4 Comments

Sometimes my DIY ideas rock, and sometimes I need a rock to hit me over the head so that I will come to my senses. Well, that “rock” today was the big announcement that our home is featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Home & Garden Private Quarters section!

I am so excited and overwhelmed to see my home in “print.” I am honored that the AJC chose our home. I love our home and I’m very proud of it.

And I love our kitchen.

Do I love the gray trim? (See how I got rid of the gray trim here.)

Do I love the gray cabinets? No. But I have done my best to make the kitchen ours:

  • open shelving (See how I feel about the open shelving one year later here…)
  • chalkboard paint backsplash with fun writing on it
  • rustic touches like the coffee mug rack
  • the coffee bar/station – Click here for how to create a coffee bar in your home!
  • a mix of textures: gloss white shelves with metal brackets, chalkboard paint, wood, wicker baskets, stainless steel, a soft rug. They all combine to create a warm space that I love.

I love you, man!

When I saw our kitchen in the feature, I knew that I wasn’t going to change it at all. I’m going to leave it, because I love it. Sometimes it takes chasing a wild idea to come back to where you started and realize you had it right all along.

The only things I did change, in the interest of full disclosure, is that I took all my coffee creamers and sugar bowls and stuff (from the top shelf of the coffee station area) and put them in the numbered baskets (see top shelf in the picture above), which freed up a top shelf for more storage. I also moved the flour and sugar jars to the lazy susan cabinet, with the other baking stuff, and moved my most-used cookbooks and recipe binder to that shelf.

It’s perfect. Just like it is.

But, starting tomorrow, the laundry room gets it. Stay tuned!

Can’t wait? See the finished laundry room reveal here!

    Hey Karen,

While beautiful and “just so”, most of the homes featured in the Home section of the AJC don’t appeal to me. But I saved last Sunday’s insert because I love your kitchen, too! How welcoming and friendly it looks!

I’ve been enjoying reading your blog, and much of what you have to say speaks to me. I love re-purposing and DIY – but I have very little spare time between work and family, so I’m taking baby steps. Funny how time just zips right by when I’m painting a wall, but at work time stands still!

Sorry to write an epistle …a fellow Atl suburbanite says Hello!

Thank you, Cathy! I really appreciate your kind words! You are so right about how time passes! When I taught, grading papers would last an eternity. But when painting a room, the day flies by! Keep taking baby steps – before you know it, you’re there! Thanks again!!
