Turn Leftover Hot Dog Buns into Garlic “Knots”

June 30, 2014 By Karen Cooper 4 Comments

After our cookouts, we always have leftover hot dog buns. I’m not sure why – maybe because more of us eat hamburgers rather than hot dogs, or that my daughter – who is our resident hot dog eater – eats them without buns. Whatever the reason, we always have them left over and I hate throwing them out. So, tonight, I turned the leftover hot dog buns into garlic “knots”!

It was a big hit with everyone! They remind me of the garlic knots from our favorite Italian restaurant! So delicious and so easy – you have to make these when you have leftover hot dog buns!

Here’s how I made them:

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the leftover hot dog buns (I had seven) into square pieces.

Melt one stick of unsalted butter and press two small cloves of garlic into the melted butter. My recommendation is to start with one clove and then smell the butter – if it’s garlicky enough, then just use one clove of garlic. Mine wasn’t (the cloves were small), so I added a second small clove. Stir.

Tear off enough heavy-duty foil to create a foil packet and add the cut buns to the packet.

Then pour the butter/garlic mixture over the buns.

Close the foil packet up and then shake it all around so that the butter and garlic coat the buns. Put the foil packet on a baking sheet and pop it in the oven.

Bake for 10-12 minutes with the packet closed. After 10 minutes, open the packet and bake for another 5 minutes.

Remove from the oven and allow your home to fill with garlicky buttery good smells!

Everyone loved them! This is all that’s left of seven hot dog buns:

Great idea! I’m always tossing the leftover buns in the trash. Might be good with cinnamon and sugar too.
