Learning from Ferris Bueller

April 26, 2013 By Karen Cooper 6 Comments

And by Ferris Bueller, I mean my daughter.

M is home “sick” today. And by “sick,” I mean she is having a mental health day.

She does this periodically.

In fact, it occurred to me this morning that she does it when I’m grading papers.

Like every time.

I think she figured she needed a little more mommy time, so she decided today was it, her mental health day.

So, she’s in my bed, watching Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and I am grading papers next to her. Periodically, she pats my arm or hugs me.

I love it. I’m relishing it. Because one day, she’ll be too busy for me or she’ll have a date or she’ll be going out with friends and she won’t want to hang out with me.

I can’t even think about that.

For now, I’m enjoying our mental health day, even if I do have to grade papers while we snuggle.

Have a great weekend, y’all. Snuggle with someone you love, too.

I think I may need a few of those myself!
Just this week, my 12 yo son came to me and said, “Mom, I can’t believe I’m almost a teenager; doesn’t time go by so fast?”
“You have no idea,” was my thought.
    Enjoy!!

I’m catching up on my blog reading tonight, sitting in bed letting my littlest watch one more Dora. Little moments are what it’s all about. All of us need that mental health day every now and again!

This touched me. I have a daughter who is grown and married. There were nothing like days we spent together when she was young. I cherish them. 🙂
