Planning My New Home Office

April 28, 2014 By Karen Cooper 4 Comments

Happy Monday, friends!

I’ve just returned from the SNAP Conference, where I learned a ton! Ready to implement all the good stuff I’ve learned, I’m planning my new home office, which will be in the new guest room after the big room move-around here.

Here are the key things I’m going to need in my new office:

1. A Good Desk

As they say, a good desk is hard to find. I’ve never had a real desk as a grown-up. I’ve used my old dining room table (from my apartment):

This table was my desk before I moved it into the living room to be used as a game table (or yet another surface on which to put stuff).

Then I used an old door:

But, even with a glass top, it was awkward to use with the panels. I could invest in a larger piece of glass, I suppose. But I feel like now it’s time for a REAL desk.

In the next month, I’m going to be scouring thrift stores and my fave consignment store for a desk. Naturally, I’ll keep you posted.

2. Command Center

To run my own business this year (i.e., this little ol’ blog), I’m going to need a command center. I need some big monthly calendars – preferably magnetic, too – kind of like these (but maybe bigger? Go big or go home, they say.):

I’m thinking about painting the wall with magnetic white board paint and making my own big calendars. I have a bulletin board already, so that’s taken care of.

3. A Comfy Chair

Along with the desk, I need a comfy chair on which to place my bum while I’m doing all this creating and writing. I have a parsons chair with a neutral cover, but I might spiff it up a bit with paint or fabric.

So, those are some of the plans I have so far. What do you have in your home office (or office away from home) that you cannot live without?

I can’t wait to follow along on this journey and to see where this year takes you.

I’d add good lighting to the list. Not just overhead lighting, but task lighting if you have old eyes and bad vision like I do . I also like having a blog planner/binder and an action file so I can access files I’m working on without getting off my butt! I like having them handy at my desk.

Miss you and hope to see you again soon!

Thanks! Yes- I am going to need some good lighting for my 43-year-old eyes! Miss you, too! I loved seeing your sightseeing pics! Wish I could have gone, too. xoxo

We all deserve a grown-up desk. One day I’m going to have one that didn’t come by way of the side of the road!

FYI, I tried to email subscribe and it just connected back to your blog. Feedburner problems?

I loved getting to know you better this past week! We were a rockin’ threesome!

Thanks! It turns out I got my desk at the local thrift store for $25 – but it is a grown-up desk!
Thanks for letting me know about Feedburner. I’ve heard there have been problems generally – I will check. Thanks!
I had an awesome time with you and Amy – let’s do it again in July, shall we?!?
