Architectural Plans as Art

September 26, 2014 By Karen Cooper 6 Comments

We got the best housewarming present ever from the previous owners of this house!

Of course, the cookies and brownies from our neighbors were amazingly wonderful, too, but this gift was right up my alley. The former owner gave us the architectural plans for our house, from when the addition was built twenty-four years ago.

In addition, she wrote us a long letter explaining the history of our home. We are only the fifth owners of this home, which is incredible because it was built in 1929!

I love the architectural drawings – the graphics, the history, the design elements – all of it. I knew I needed to give them a place of honor in our home.

So, I decided to frame them and hang them in our family room.

After all, they are art.

I just used two frames from IKEA. Could not have been easier.

When you think about hanging “art” in your home, think outside the traditional idea of art as paintings or sculpture. Art can be anything that you appreciate – whether it be an architectural drawing or a kid’s artwork or record albums… Anything that makes you happy when you look at it!

I love them! What a wonderful gift your home’s prior owners gave to you! We have always displayed the plans for our homes (all four of them to date) on the walls as art. Sadly, I’ve been unable to obtain a copy of the original plans for our 1950’s home yet but I’ve got copies of the new plans ready for the wall in my studio just as soon as the renovation is over. Thanks for the source for your frames, they’re perfect!

What a great way to get to know your home! I envy all the fun you’re having in the new place. Like the way that room is coming together.

Thanks, Cheryl! Yes – I thought it was interesting how the plans changed (there were several pages – I just used the final ones) and they ended up with our home.
