My Thrifting Bucket List

June 14, 2014 By Karen Cooper 8 Comments

I love going to thrift stores and garage/estate/yard sales. I love snooping around to see what I can find. That said, I have a “bucket list” of prized goodies that I really want to find on my adventures. An old scale. A manual, vintage typewriter. And I have always wanted to find an old wooden ironing board. I thought it would make a great table.

So, when I saw a sign for an estate sale on Friday, I thought I’d check it out. Lo and behold, look what I found!

I couldn’t believe it. Just sitting there. It didn’t have a price tag, so I asked how much it was. She said $5 (I later learned that pretty much everything you asked her the price on was $5). I gladly forked over the $5 and brought this baby home!

As you can see, it needed some TLC before it could become the table I wanted. I grabbed some Murphy’s Oil Soap wipes and got to work.

It was one dirty bird.

I wiped all of it down and decided to put it in my dining room.

I just love the geometry of it – the lines, the angles. I love the simplicity of it.

I added my thrift-store-find fork and spoon on top. I found these for $4 and they were black. I spray painted them with Rust-Oleum Satin Nickel spray paint.

I may end up hanging them on the wall, but, for now, they’ll be on my ironing board.

I love my little ironing board and am thrilled that I can cross this off my list!

I just love to go junking. I like little things like type pieces or Russian dolls with one inside the other, or fun, big metal cogs and gears. Right now Hubs is putting a brass rod into a beautiful, big chunk of walnut and I have a naturally bleached out horse jaw bone (some teeth too) that will mount on the rod. Can’t decide if I should leave it as is – I think it’s cool but it(grosses some people out- or spray paint the jaw a metallic color.
Anyway, your board looks great with that wall arrangement, and just the right size for that area. I like the asymmetrical balance of the legs. Neat piece.

Cool! Thanks, Cheryl! I love Russian dolls, too. I used them in teaching and so I have a little collection of them.
