As you may remember from this post, I’m part of a writing group and we have a weekly writing prompt. Today’s prompt is:
If you could write a note to your younger self, what would you say in only two words?
Now, if you know me, you know that I rarely use only two words to say anything, so this was a challenge for me. After much thought, the two words that keep popping in my head are:
BE YOU.
The times in my life I have been most happy are those in which I was true to myself: When I’m creating. When I’m helping rescue animals. When I’m writing. When I’m dancing to upbeat music like a maniac.
The times in my life when I have been unhappy are those in which I tried to be something that didn’t fit me: Being a lawyer, especially in the area of litigation when I’m not a fan of conflict. Taking an international economics class that sounded like a foreign language to me because I thought I should take the class. Relationships I should have walked away from quickly.
I’m really lucky that I’m at a place in my life now where I get to “be me.”
It’s hard, when you’re young, to understand that you are fine. That you are just excellent the way you are. That you don’t have to be something you aren’t just because it seems like the thing to do. That is a knowledge and a comfort level that only comes with age and experience.
I know I can’t go back and tell my younger self this, but I can certainly teach this to my kids. Be you, and you will be fine.
What would your two words be? Please leave a comment below with your two words.
Have a great weekend everyone! Thanks for stopping by!
