Let’s talk design styles. In this post, I talked about how it’s ok to defy any sort of definition when thinking about your own personal style. What’s your style?
In that post, I defined my style as “modern upcycled colorful eclectic.” I also noted how, in one design quiz I took, it described my style as “cottage.” I disagreed with that assessment at the time.
But then I looked at my Pinterest boards. What did I find? A lot of blues, greens, and rustic touches. Hmmmm. Maybe cottage is appropriate after all? Maybe my style is just truly eclectic, mixing different styles in a happy combination.
So, what’s your style?
Can you define your design style?
- Do you think you fit in one style, or is your home more of an eclectic mix?
- How would you name your own personal design style?
Discuss! Please leave a comment explaining your answer(s) and let’s start a discussion. I can’t wait to see what y’all say!
Thanks for stopping by!
Great idea, Karen! I never seem to fit into the criteria of a certain style — more a blend of traditional/cottage. And sometimes not even that! 🙂

Thanks, Heidi! Yes, that’s exactly why I wanted to start a discussion about this. I don’t know if I could peg my home as one style or another, but I think many homes are all one style or another. I wanted to discuss it to see whether more people identify their design style with one in particular, or more eclectic mixing of styles.
I’ve been wanting to get in on one of these. Good going Karen. My magic number is 3, and with my style, I always say it’s Clean, Colorful and Comfortable. I just love too many things to pin it down more definately. A lot of my stuff is very clean lined though, nothing too overtsuffed. I usually stay neutral with upholstered furniture because 1. I like to change things ALL the time so I use the fun fabrics and colors in accessories, and 2. We have dogs, and and now grandkids so our major family area pieces are leather. Plus we’re very casual and eat by the TV a lot (and can be kind of messy) so leather is good.
I think life is too short to limit yourself to any one thing of any kind. It’s more fun not too!
Absolutely, Cheryl! With dogs and kids around, you have to keep things manageable and clean. I like your three Cs! Perfect!
I believe you already reminded me about my previous Early American Wal-Mart comment. I swear I’ve moved on in the last twenty years, but I don’t know to what.
You have, clearly (I’ve seen photos). I think that’s the point, really. Do we have to define a particular style, or can we just mix it up and call it eclectic and that’s that?
This is fun. I’ll see you all next Tuesday!
Yay! See you then!
Ohhhhh, fun topic!
I’m definitely drawn toward traditional furnishings; I have a lot of curvy arms, legs, cushions, tabletops. I also have a soft spot for Chinoiserie accents. I’m not afraid of bold colors and tend to use them on the floor – in bold patterned rugs.
@ Cheryl Brindle – I love your style – – “Clean Comfortable, Colorful”
You know how I love bold colors! Do you have more neutral furnishings with pops of color in the accessories, or do you have a red couch, for example? Sounds beautiful.
