Repurposed Curtain Rod & Brackets

March 10, 2015 By Karen Cooper 4 Comments

While I love my guest room makeover, I still had a problem to deal with in this room. The air conditioning condenser unit is right outside this room, and it makes a good bit of noise. Also, this side of the house – the addition – generally is cooler than the original part of the house (weird, right?). While there is a shade on that window, it didn’t really help with these problems. I needed a solution. As with most problems, a quilt fixed it.

A quilt as a window treatment? Sort of…

I wanted to hang the quilt over the window as a sound buffer and to warm things up in here. But I wanted it to be accessible to guests as a quilt, too.

I used a wooden dowel between two old trowels to hang the quilt over the window.

Trowels? You mean the things you use to spread tile adhesive?

Yep.

I found these two old trowels at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and they looked like hooks. When I tried the dowel, it fit right in the handles of the trowel! Score!

Did I mention that the trowels were less than $3 each? Much cheaper than drapery hardware, and much stronger.

I painted them red, mounted them on 2×4 pieces (which I painted white, the same color as the window trim) so that they would fit over the window frame, and added the dowel across them.

Now I have a cool window treatment that not only blocks the light, but also the noise and the chill. And guests can simply pull down the quilt when they want to use it, and the window shade under it will still block the light.

Thanks for sharing! I love old quilts – and it does add a lot of color to the room.

Thanks, Liz! The quilt was made by my husband’s aunt – I love it! (P.S. I love my cast iron skillet!)

Way to rock the window Karen! 🙂 I love the creativity of the trowels and the addition of the color to them. Extraordinary! 🙂
As a sewer/quilter/artist/maker, I would hope you would A. add a hanging sleeve to the back of the quilt so it hangs more like a window treatment and preserves the quilt; and B. shorten the length of the dowel. Nope, you didn’t ask.
