Five Things Every Laundry Room Needs (Friday Five)

June 16, 2017 By Karen Cooper 4 Comments

Happy Friday, friends! As I mentioned in one of my newsletters (if you haven’t subscribed, you really should! Click here to subscribe!), I am working on redoing the laundry room. Our laundry room used to have this big, bulky ironing board built into the wall:

I finally had that removed (because, really, I don’t iron!) and the drywall patched, so now it needs some sprucing up! A new coat of paint and a few other touches to make it pretty again. I mean, laundry should be made as pleasant as possible, right?

So, in that vein, I was thinking that, today’s Friday Five should be about laundry rooms!

Here are five things every laundry room needs:

(1) Storage

Between the detergents and stain removers and cleaning products and drying racks, laundry rooms need storage.

Whether cabinets or shelves, storage is a must. We had these wire shelves in our laundry room, but I’d like to find storage that’s a bit more hidden away. After all, I like knowing where the cleaning products are, but I don’t want to look at them all the time.

How cute is this little caddy from HomeGoods?

This is perfect to hold laundry detergent and other essentials.

(2) Clothes Sorters

It’s great to have clothes sorters in a laundry room to separate the color, white, and towel loads.

You can buy laundry sorters, like these industrial-style ones:

Or build this laundry pedestal and add baskets to make your own:

(3) A drying rack

One of my favorite things in my laundry room is this hanging drying rack from IKEA:

And I have a little hack to make it even more useful: add clips from kid-sized hangers (when your kids have outgrown using the kid-sized ones!) to hang items that can’t be hung over the rack!

(4) Folding Counter

Having a spot to fold clothes is really helpful!

And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to have one! I made this DIY laundry folding counter out of a desk top from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore!

(5) Something pretty, too!

Laundry is no fun. So, the room where you do the laundry should be inspiring or at least pretty!

I added antique washboards to our laundry room to give it a little style.

Hi Karen, super list! The one thing I always like in my laundry area is a little bowl or mason jar to catch the extra things left in pockets or loose buttons, etc. that fall off during wash cycles. It was always full when the kids were still home. Have a happy weekend!

Ooh, I like the idea of the clothes sorter. You could totally make space for that in a pedestal for the washer and dryer. Currently my laundry room doesn’t have a sorting are and I have taken to using the couch or the kitchen table….This gives me some ideas for future laundry room makeovers…Thanks!
