My almost-five-year-old daughter has very strong views and opinions about what she likes and doesn’t. She has been this way certainly as long as she’s been able to communicate those opinions to us, and probably long before that, too. For example, she started picking out her own clothes when she was 2 1/2. I would lay out her clothes and, if she objected, she would throw them on the floor and wear whatever she wanted.*
So it comes as no surprise that she now has strong opinions about her room. Currently, her room’s walls are painted lavender. She has a Pottery Barn rug that’s mostly white/off-white with a green border and flowers. Last month, she proclaimed to me that the rug was “horrible” and that she “hated” purple and that she wanted her room all green.
Yes, all green, she said. Green sheets, green quilt, green walls, green carpet. Kermit green. There was no hesitation in her voice.
Yeah, no.
I said that we could do all green and white and/or another color, but we are not painting the walls Kermit green. She reluctantly agreed. Whew.
Since then, I have been scouring the internet and stores to find the green decor she wants. So far, I’ve done the bed. Here it is:
(The bedding came from Bed, Bath and Beyond; the pillows are from Ikea.)
So now I’m working on the rest of it. I’ve decided to paint her room white, with a green thick stripe around the top middle of the walls. That avoids the entire room being green. I bought several of these rugs at Ikea that I’m going to connect together to make an area rug:
I also bought some white, blue and green fabric from Ikea to make “faux” Roman shades (like these) for her windows.
So, as you can see, it’s definitely green, but with enough white and blue to break it up. Also, I like the fun patterns and keeping it still kid-like. She is only almost five, after all.
I’m going to try to get the room painted tomorrow and the rug and shades put together. I’ll finish it over the weekend, keeping her out while work is in progress so I can surprise her with everything else. We’ll see how it goes.
* Note: The subject of M’s wardrobe choices would take up a whole ‘nuther post. More on that another day. Here’s one example, age 3 (gratuitous cute kid picture):
