The Friday Five: Five HQ Updates

March 5, 2016 By Karen Cooper 6 Comments

Have you noticed that The Friday Five is increasingly becoming The Saturday Five? Yeah – me, too. Apparently, Friday has become the “Supreme Day of Nuttiness” around here.  But, as promised, I wanted to update you on the stuff that’s been going on here at HQ. So, finally, this week’s Friday Five: five HQ updates.

(1) The Pantry

I started demo on the pantry on February 13. Then I found mold from an old leak there and had to have it remediated and the drywall repaired.

But on Wednesday, the drywall repair guy came and, by Thursday, finished fixing the pantry!  Woo hoo!

On Friday, I painted the trim around the floor and window white to match the trim in the rest of the kitchen (it was still gray).

Tomorrow (Sunday), I plan to paint the ceiling and walls. Then the fun begins! The trash/recycling cabinet and shelves go in…and then I can finally, finally get the contents of our pantry off the dining room table.

(2) The Comcast Leak

Progress is finally being made! We have finally been reimbursed for the mold remediation, and the rest of the reimbursement should be coming this week. Considering we found the leak at the beginning of January, this has been a long time coming. With any luck at all, we should have the full payment for this claim by the end of next week. Or so says Comcast.

(3) Air Quality Testing

On a related note, I had an air quality test done for our home this week. I wanted to make sure that we truly had gotten rid of the mold in our home, to make sure it’s healthy and safe.

The results of the test came back today, and show that there are two kinds of mold that have elevated levels in our home, but that they are normally elevated in older homes like ours and are not the really bad harmful kind. Not that any mold is good, but it isn’t alarming.

The guy said I should talk to our remediation guy to see if there’s an easy way to figure out where it’s coming from. If not, he said it’s usually not something that would cause a health or safety risk.

Any more of this talk about mold, and I’m going to rename this blog “The Fungus Among Us.” (Thanks, Robin!) God forbid.

(4) Me

If you follow me on Facebook (and why don’t you?!?), then you heard me complain that I had a head cold this week. Thank you for your sweet well wishes! Thankfully, it was just a head cold that we passed around our family, and I was the last to get it. It’s on its way out now. In related news, soup is good food.

(5) Big Giveaway Coming TOMORROW!

You are NOT going to want to miss this giveaway, starting tomorrow. It’s BIG. Really big. As big as a 5×8 rug, in fact. Hint, hint. Stay tuned!

This is going to be a big week here at HQ, and I can’t wait to share all kinds of crazy-cool projects with you!

Sunday: The Big, Huge, Seriously Awesome Giveaway

Monday: Spring arrives at HQ!

Tuesday: A Before and After, Farmhouse Style

Wednesday: You’ll Need a Spud Finder…HA! Get it?? DIY potato humor!

And then, hopefully, mercifully, by the end of the week…THE PANTRY!

You aren’t going to want to miss this week. It’s going to be HUGE!

Hi Karen. I’m understanding the mold thing. Just not too sure about having it in my home, like you, would make me uncomfortable. I do follow on Facebook, but have not had it circulate through my feed? It’s FB, it’s really their choice anyway, right.
But I’m happy the head colds are coming to an end for all of you. Comcast, sounds like they pay like the state, slowly. Very slowly! Glad you were able to pull out your bag o tricks to get that remediated. I hope your day planner for the week stays on track, mine, I give up and just going to accomplish what I can. My issue now is living room ceiling. Ten coats of paint, 3 months, and it still looks like leopard print! Valspar guy came out and Lowes manager, they have never seen this happen before! Me either for that matter. I wish us both luck in accomplishing our goals. Feel better family, Hope

Hi Hope – I’m still going to get the remediation guy to check the mold levels to see if we can find it easily. I’m not that comfortable with it, but apparently it’s not enough to cause issues and so I have to weigh that against, for example, tearing up walls and floors to find it.
As for Facebook, it’s so fickle! Sometimes it lets lots of my readers see posts; sometimes, not so much. If you want to get all posts, go to the “like” button and hover over it. Then, where it says “notifications,” click “on (all posts).” Then you will get all the posts. Otherwise, it’s at the whim of Mr. Zuckerberg.
That is crazy about your ceiling! I wonder if there’s wallpaper or something buried under the paint??
Good luck! Hang in there! Let’s git er done, as they say!

I’m so glad it’s ‘almost’ over. Sorry about the colds – talk about adding insult to injury!
If I had Facebook, I would follow you, but I only have instagram and follow you there . (I am mews978.)
    PS I loathe Comcast.

Thanks, Mickey! You don’t need to be on FB to get updates. Subscribing is the best way to make sure to get all the latest news! And I’ve seen you on IG – thanks!! Hope you are well!

Good to hear from you! I looked on Friday and, given all that has been going on with you, I get a bit concerned when you are not there in my inbox. And, I don’t Facebook at all! : ) This blog “sounds” upbeat and enthusiastic and I’m glad to “hear” it! I’m looking forward to next week, too!

Aw, thank you, Karen! I’m very enthusiastic and ready to have some resolution to these issues. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and am ready to get there (and enjoy the ride!)! Thank you!!
