The Friday Five: Survey Says…!

August 21, 2015 By Karen Cooper 7 Comments

About two weeks ago, I asked y’all to complete a short survey about the blog. I wanted to know what you liked to read about, how you find projects here, which projects are your favorites, and how to improve the blog. You guys ROCK! So many people answered the survey, and y’all gave such thoughtful answers – I loved it!

So, today I thought I’d let you know the results of the survey. Like Richard Dawson, but without the creepy kissing part.

It doesn’t quite fit the Friday Five theme, because there ended up being six questions. But I started with five questions, then added a sixth – so let’s call it close enough. Survey says…

Question 1: What type of posts do you like most from Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza?

Painting projects
1.75%
Home decor/room decorating
31.58%
Room reveals
5.26%
DIY projects
61.40%

DIY projects win in a landslide! I was actually a little surprised by this; I thought room reveals or decor might make a stronger showing. I’m all about that DIY, so this works for me!

Question 2: Why do you read Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza?

I want to learn how to do the projects featured.
25.86%
I want to learn how to decorate a home.
20.69%
I like recycling or repurposing projects.
51.72%
I like the writing/stories.
24.14%
I like dogs and think they should eat pizza.
15.52%
I like Karen’s thrift store and salvage adventures.
34.48%

It did crack me up that 15.5% of you thought dogs should eat pizza. Hank is using this groundswell of support to lobby for his right to pizza. (It won’t work.)

Question 3: How do you find projects at Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza?

I just read the latest post.
76.79%
I use the “project index” in the main menu.
8.93%
I search by post name or project.
7.14%
I search by category.
8.93%
I search by date.
0%
I search by keyword of what I’m looking for (“dining room,” e.g.).
16.07%

In a landslide, “reading the latest post” wins! This question was important to me because I want to make sure you can find projects on the site, beyond the latest post. I’m glad that some of you have used the keyword search function or the categories; I’ll make sure that functionality is always there and easy to find and use.

Question 4: Have you ever done a project you first saw on Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza?

Yes
16.36%
No
72.73%
I tried to!
10.91%

I’m really glad that 16% of you have tried projects featured here! One thing – a major thing – I want to convey on this blog is that if I can do it, anyone can do it.

Question 5: What is your favorite Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza post and why is it your favorite?

  • “I liked the evolution of your dining room. It hit close to home. I think that is a reason I enjoy DDEP; the similarities to my interests, home decorating experiences. love of thrift store and auction finds.”
  • The kitchen remodel; “I like the post about your kitchen make-over. it gave me inspiration to work on my kitchen.” (Yay!)
  • “Like them all for different reasons- but I’d guess the one recently about the dog that doesn’t eat pizza– because it was real… And how we all feel… It’s not just about decor projects/ or reveals … But she’s taken the time to share not just her talent, but a bit of her everyday life… Good & bad.”
  • “The teachers lounge reveal…suspense, surprise, love, beauty…who could ask for more?” (I have a feeling I know who wrote that one. It screams a certain friend of mine…)
  • “Building shelves over the washer and dryer to make more space. It was a “duh” idea that makes so much sense! And it’s easy and inexpensive to do!”
  • “Brighten boring builtins with fabric, b/c I love fabric and I love that it is simple but makes a big impact. Also not crazy or expensive. I like how all your ideas are down to earth and relatable.”
  • “Faux roman blinds– going to do it one day!”
  • “Anything about the doggies!” – many of you gave that response! (Love.)

I want the projects here to be easy, fun, and totally customizable to what you need or want for your home.

Question 6: If you could do one thing to improve Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza, what would it be?

  • “More appealing photos.” – I’m actually working on this. I’ve signed up for a photography class!
  • “More step-by-step, with exact details.”
  • “More dog photos!”
  • “Thought it was cool the video of ya chatting with us– from time to time, cool! And just keeping real – open dialogue!” – I love this idea and am going to be using Periscope more to do live video posts/chats. I’m @dogsdonteatpza on Periscope.
  • “Ads are a little distracting but probably a necessary evil.” – Yes, sadly, I need them to keep the projects going and the lights on here at HQ. I try to keep them as minimal and not intrusive as possible.
  • “It would be fun if there was a hands on class!” There is! I teach classes at the Atlanta Habitat for Humanity ReStore! Also, I’m seriously considering offering other classes as well. If you’re in the Atlanta area and are interested, please let me know!

THANK YOU for all of your feedback! It means so much to me. I’m listening and will keep improving! THANK YOU!!

Happy Friday!

Decatur Makers might be a good place for DIY classes.

It’s towns county. The house is in Young Harris. Where the college is and the north Georgia mountain fair grounds. Hiawassee is more well know. It’s a 3 story, 4 bed, 3 bath. 3/4 wrap. We LOVE it up there. And yes, friends are welcome anytime with the whole pack!!!!
If you know where Blue ridge is, we are about 35 miles north .
